I was talking to an AE not too long ago that said I had a really eye catching resume, having worked at Evernote, Outreach, HubSpot, and now Salesloft.

I have the resume that I have because I planned it that way.

I did that because I wanted a really impressive resume that would open doors for me.

When I was really early in my career, I’m talking those first few years, I decided that I wanted to go all in on sales and see how far I could take it.

I set a goal for myself to someday work at Google as a Field AE. I loved Google (still do) and considered that to be the pinnacle of sales career success.

At the time, I was working in a smile and dial boiler room as a player/coach on straight commission + residuals. I had a looooonnnnggggggg way to go.

That said, once I had Google as my north star, the rest just sort of fell into place.

There were never any questions about when I should leave for a new job and what that job should be. If it got me a step closer to Google, it was the right move.

Ultimately I fell short, but I aint sad.

It’s like that old saying about shooting for the moon but landing in the stars, or something like that.

The best thing you can do for your career is to set a goal, make a plan, and get proactive.

If you feel stuck, burnt, or lost this is your sign to find your north star and confidently move in that direction.

Tactical Tip

A lifetime ago I was a territory AE working from named accounts.

My territory was Detroit... I live in Texas. 🤢

In addition to this being a garbage territory for what I was selling, there were TONS of great-fit-ICP prospects right in my own backyard.

I couldn't sell to them because they weren't mine. 😢

It's like having a pool in your backyard that your not allowed to us AND it's 100 degrees out.

Here's what I wish I would have done then.
